What does a Mothers Helper do?

I have loved babies for as long as I can remember, and wanted my own since I became a niece when I was 9 years old!

I have been fortunate to raise my lovely son on my own since he was two, which has been such a privilege. But not having family around, it has also been a real struggle at times. I can now see that having a support network close by, especially in the early days, is of vital importance to the whole family.

The majority of the babies' needs in the few weeks and months comes from Mum, which is extremely demanding and sometimes relentless with very little sleep. Unfortunately many new parents now live away from Grandparents, siblings and cousins and find themselves with little or no support network. Having another pairs of hands, even for a few hours a week can make all the difference.

Paternity leave is usually only a couple of weeks at best, which leaves Mum and baby at home alone which can be very lonely and isolating. Having a resourced and supported Mama can really help with the transition into new Motherhood, which can often put a huge strain of a relationship/marriage in the first few months/years. For any parents doing it solo, I salute you! I know first hand how hard it is, so can totally understand how brutally isolating and relentless it can feel at times. I have been on the edge of burnout more times than I can remember, which could have been prevented by having more support. You cannot 'call in sick' and take a day off, or even a morning when you are a solo parent, so preventing burnout is absolutely necessary.

New Motherhood/Parenthood is such a precious and magical time, but let's be honest, it is an emotional rollercoaster. All the worry and lack of sleep that comes with parenting can be absolutely exhausting, let alone the hormones, and recovery from birth. Just knowing that you are going to have some help a few hours a week, can enable you to feel supported so you can enjoy those first few weeks as much as possible.

Whatever you family set up is, as a Mother's help I am happy to be flexible and adaptable in whatever your needs are on that particular day. I can do shopping, run errands, cook some nutritional meals/healthy snacks, clean the kitchen, or light housework. I can make you a cup of tea and be a listening ear, or a shoulder to cry on. I can take care of older siblings, walk the dog, or hold the baby whilst you take a bath, or make a phone call. I can be a non-judgemental, calm and gentle presence, who you can speak to in confidence. I can also share some simple Reflexology techniques for you to support your baby with. This can be especially helpful for colic and teething. I can also offer you Reflexology whilst holding baby, or baby nearby. Not having to worry about the mundane tasks like shopping and cleaning can enable you to prioritise bonding with your beautiful baby.

In 2020 I completed my Post-Natal Doula training with the amazing Olivia Sec, founder of Radiant Mamas, which was magical and reaffirmed how much I love working with new Mums and babies. I have also enjoyed volunteering at Radiant Mamas offering donation Reflexology for pregnant and new Mums.
